Meet  Zachary: Father of Five and College Student

 Steelton, PA

“Now I’m working to obtain a degree that I can use to hold a standard 9-to-5 job to gain more time with my kids.”

Zachary Wonder, a student in HACC’s Industrial Technology Program, was home schooled and obtained his GED when he was 19. He became a father at age 20 and today has five children.

Zachary said, “Most of my work experience comes within the hotel industry. I started as a van driver and worked my way up to a Front Office Manager. Now I’m working to obtain a degree that I can use to hold a standard 9-to-5 job to gain more time with my kids.”

HACC students like Zachary are skilled at managing the demands of parenthood while balancing work life and college coursework. It’s not easy, and the flexibility that HACC offers is sometimes a necessary ingredient. Zachary, for instance, can take all the classes needed for his associate degree online. He described this as “easy access to obtain my degree while still working to support my family.” Without this level of flexibility, it’s hard to imagine how Zachary would be able to get the education he needs to move into the career he wants.

Zachary said that HACC has made his life better by “giving a father of 5 who wants to continue his education the ability to do so by providing online classes at a great cost.”
