Dual Enrollment

HACC continues to support dual enrollment students to academic success as students begin their college journey as high school students. Students should check Hawkmail regularly as important information is shared to guide students to college success before, during and after the semester.

Students are assigned “Success Coach” as their HACC advisor and can contact Student Success Coaching at any time for help with course selection and registration, using HACC resources, college course questions and support and anything else as they navigate college.

Dual enrollment students are eligible to take any HACC course as long as course pre-requisites are met. Here is helpful information for college course selection:

  1. Talk to high school counselor. Students may take college courses that can count for high school requirements. It is important to confirm this with your high school counselor and plan to take these courses before the spring semester of high school graduation.
     
  2. Take college major specific courses. Students can take courses in their projected major to get ahead. View HACC’s programs for diploma, certificate and associate degree options.
     
  3. Consider general education courses. General education courses are requirements that are outside of a student’s major for an associate or bachelor’s degree. Popular courses include ENGL 101, COMM 101, CIS 105 or choosing at least one course from each of the core elective areas.
     
  4. Meet college course eligibility. Students can view course descriptions to determine pre-requisite eligibility. Students can meet college level requirements via
    1. established multiple measures or
    2. HACC placement testing. There are college level courses that do not have prerequisites that any student can pursue.
       
  5. Not sure where to start? Review general education requirements for the Liberal Studies Certificate. Students can take 10 HACC general education classes to earn a college credential. These credits will be applied directly to meet requirements for associate and/or bachelor degree programs.
     

  6. Meet upper level college math course eligibility.  Confirmed AP test scores can be confirmed via College Board download of official score report OR submit official scores from College Board to HACC (transcripteval@hacc.edu). HACC math placement test is offered on campus and can be scheduled at this link.

Think College: Tips for Dual Enrollment Students

Registering for a college course is just the first step for high school dual enrollment students. The below information offers students helpful college success tips that will get them started on the path to pursuing their goals.

CommunicationTeachers and counselors provide frequent reminders and support.Check college email regularly. Students are responsible for communicating with faculty and seeking help. Parents may communicate on a student's behalf only when a FERPA release is on file. Dual enrollment students can also contact Student Success Coaching.
AttendanceFollow high school attendance policies.Attendance requirements are listed in the course syllabus. Attend/log in on the first day and complete the required first-week activity. Failure to meet attendance requirements can result in being dropped from the course.
DeadlinesTeachers may provide reminders, extensions, or opportunities to make up work.Follow the deadlines in the syllabus or course site. Extensions are determined by the faculty member, and late work may result in a lower grade.
ResponsibilityTeachers provide structure, reminders, and guidance.You are responsible for managing your time, deadlines, course policies, and academic progress. Ask for help when you need it.
CalendarFollow the high school calendar.College courses follow the college academic calendar. You must follow both calendars. If high school is closed but college is in session, you are expected to attend your college course.
GradesGrades may include many assignments, homework, make-up work, and extra credit.Fewer assignments may carry more weight. Tests, quizzes, and projects may make up most of your grade. Extra credit is limited and grading policies are listed in the syllabus.
SupportAsk teachers or classmates for assistance.Take advantage of college resources, including free tutoring, library services, and Student Success Coaching.
TechnologySchool-issued devices and familiar school platforms may be provided.Courses use Brightspace and other online platforms. Students should have reliable access to a laptop/device. College computer labs are available.
WorkloadClass time and homework vary by course.Plan for 1–2 hours of study outside class for every credit hour. A 3-credit course may require approximately 6–9 hours per week of class and study time.
